Janet Gilmore Testimonial – Rolda Volunteer

Testimonial of Janet Gilmore – Rolda Volunteer

I met Dana Costin who runs ROLDA, several years ago whilst I stayed at her small shelter in Galati. My visit was intended to discuss new ways of helping ROLDA to re-home some of the dogs held at that shelter and those at the larger shelter. Although my visit had been planned several months in advance, Dana continually did not turn up to meetings to discuss better ways to help the dogs in her charge. When questioned about this, she became aggressive. This behaviour has continued throughout the 3 years of knowing Dana. Whilst I was there, Dana continually evaded several questions regarding spay/neutering and even the dogs living right next door to the small shelter were not offered this supposed ‘free’ service. I visited the large shelter several times and asked Dana why all the dogs did not have any beds or toys – her response was that they would fight over them. So in the midst of winter all the dogs slept on concrete.

A friend of mine, Chrissy Phillips, went out of her way to purchase plastic crates at her own expense, to get the dogs off the ground and sent them over to Dana. That was 2 years ago – the crates have never been used and the dogs still sleep on the hard, cold concrete.

I have visited Romania on many occasions and worked with other animal charities. I have taken many dogs from ROLDA and have fostered them until their new forever homes were available. On endless occasions Dana has made ‘mistakes’ with the gender of the dogs, with character details, us not being informed of existing health issues. When phoning or emailing Dana to tell her of these situations, she has always come back on the defensive and blamed someone else, or attacked me for my lack of knowledge. I received many, many emails from Dana threatening me.

The large shelter in Galati which is run by ROLDA and funded by Mittal, offers no creature comforts whatsoever for the dogs. The people working at the site only ‘muck out’ and give food; there is no human interraction whatsoever. As far as I could ascertain, dogs in this shelter could be left there for the remainder of their lives.

Just over a year ago, I fostered 3 Irish Wolfhound-type dogs from ROLDA – I couldn’t believe my eyes as they were the skinniest dogs I’ve ever seen. When I rang Dana to ask why they were so thin she told me that the winter had been particularly harsh and no-one could get to the shelter to feed them. Bearing in mind that by the time I got Mica, Alba and Susie it was MAY!

Throughout my ‘liaison’ with Dana, I have found her to be a liar on several occasions and I believe without a shadow of doubt that she does not care about the dogs in her charge, only the monetary aspect of running a charity.  I have also been party to some of the emails she has sent to friends of mine threatening them

It´s a pitty we have such people working against all these animals. We´re a small charity from Sibiu, doing our best to help the stray animals, paying for them by our own. We cannot find sponsors because of people like Dana, because of what she´s doing! It´s really sad to see how low people can go, how, again, defenseless animals have to suffer because of human idiocy and greed. I´m sorry Nancy and all others had to meet this kind of people, I´m sorry all that money is wasted instead of being used for the strays…

  2. Dear Janet,

What you write is heartbreaking. Really, really, sad. Poor dogs.

Dana is the sick, diseased apple from a whole “orchard” of dedicated Romanian animal rescuers. What she has done has absolutely no excuse, judging by Romanian or foreign standards.

Thank you for sharing your story with us!

Unspeakable!!! You have no idea how many organizations and “humans” like ROLDA and Dana Costin are doing such terrible things! We are many who do love animals and try to rescue them but nobody knows us and nobody gives a damn about us. It’s petty that so many money that could of saved so many dogs in desperate situations were donated to NGO’s like ROLDA! We, the one who nobody knows and nobody cares are struggling to feed and take care alone (and many times from our children’s food money) of stray dogs and when we need and ask help from NGO’s and other so called non-profit organizations they don’t even look at us! All they do (the majority of them with small exceptions) is asking for money and volunteers! I am just asking myself: the fact that i struggle alone with all the strays from my street, the fact that i am feeding them daily even if sometimes i don’t have enough food for my family, isn’t an act of volunteer? Yes it is and you know what’s the difference between them and us? They get your donations and we get nothing! They are payed for what they do and we are not and i am proud i’m not payed! I would never ask a penny for my daily “second job”. My first job is my child, my second job is taking care of strays and the third is the job as an employee! and i am not asking anything for the first two jobs. But crooks like Dana Costin are have a single job : to steel your money and she was doing it well! Maybe is time to change things here and you good people from other countries to realize that sometimes under the mask of on NGO are hidden so many crooks! Thank God that the misery called ROLDA was discovered and put an end to it! Wish you the best and keep up the amazing job you do!

Thank you for sharing this with us all. This just adds to the evidence that is already present about this thief and confirms that she should never be allowed near dogs. I daresay she will continue to shout scream and threaten people to try and bully them into thinking otherwise, but I for one will not be scared into believing she is innocent. There are too many things stacking up against her. That woman is a leech, she latches onto whatever she can and bleeds the proceeds dry. Those poor dogs dont deserve to be treated like that. They need food, comfort and warmth alongside compassion.
